An Introduction to LiDAR Technology
Thursday, March 1, 2007; 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
University of Rhode Island, Kingston Campus
Weaver Auditorium at the Coastal Institute
LiDAR is becoming hot topic both in Rhode Island and the region. New LiDAR data are slowly being made available and more acquisitions are being considered in the region. This free public seminar looks to introduce GIS and remote sensing practitioners to LiDAR technology. Mission planning considerations, processing techniques, and examples & demonstrations of how LiDAR is used to support a variety of applications will be discussed. EarthData and ESRI products and services with respect to LiDAR will be featured.
Preregistration is now closed. There are still about 20 seats available, so walk-in registrations will be accepted on a space-available basis.
Who are the instructors? This seminar will be taught by experts from both EarthData and ESRI.
How much does this seminar cost? This event is free and open to the public. Those familiar with the application of GIS and remote sensing technologies will benefit most from this seminar.
Who is sponsoring this event? The URI Geospatial Extension Program, National Park Service Coastal and Barrier Network, URI Coastal Institute, and RIGIS are partnering to sponsor this event.
How do I register? Preregistration has closed. Walk-in registration is available on a space-available basis. About 20 seats remain as of 12 pm on 2/28.
Where might I find directions to campus & Weaver Auditorium? These will be emailed to you along with your URI visitor parking pass after you preregister.
What is LiDAR anyway? LiDAR stands for "Light Detection and Ranging". It's typically used to collect very accurate elevation data for use within a variety of contexts, such as generating elevation contour lines, learning about beach profiles, and modeling terrain for 3D applications. A nice LiDAR primer is available from the NOAA Coastal Services Center.
