Thursday, March 1, 2007; 8:30 am - 12:00 pm

University of Rhode Island, Kingston Campus Weaver Auditorium at the Coastal Institute

LiDAR is becoming hot topic both in Rhode Island and the region. New LiDAR data are slowly being made available and more acquisitions are being considered in the region. This seminar looks to introduce GIS and remote sensing practitioners to LiDAR technology. Mission planning considerations, processing techniques, and examples & demonstrations of how LiDAR is used to support a variety of applications will be discussed. This seminar will be taught by experts from both EarthData and ESRI, and as such their products and services with respect to LiDAR will be featured.

This seminar is free and open to the public. The URI Geospatial Extension Program, National Park Service Coastal and Barrier Network, URI Coastal Institute, and RIGIS are partnering to sponsor this event.

Online registration and more information are available at http://geospatial.uri.edu/events/LiDAR. Preregistration is required because seating is limited and parking permits will be provided.

New open space data posted; updated E-911 and transportation data posted.

The following Open Space data added:

Cartography with ArcGIS: June 6-8, 2006

3-day training course pricing: Standard - $1350; RI Gov't - $1275; Educational - $810

This course uses a combination of conceptual lessons emphasizing the basic principles of cartographic design along with lessons on how to apply these principles using the cartographic and geoprocessing tools available in ArcGIS Desktop to create outstanding maps. Participants will examine factors that control and influence cartographic design; learn techniques for best displaying vector and raster data; and create maps that communicate information effectively. This course is for those with limited formal cartography education who want to produce high-quality map products in ArcGIS Desktop.

It will be held over January 10 - 12, 2006.

This three-day hands-on computer course provides an introduction to the capabilities and functionality of ESRI's ArcGIS®, software. Using the current version of the software, you will learn how to use ArcMap™, ArcCatalog™, and ArcToolbox™. In addition, we teach the fundamentals of working with GIS data, how to query a GIS database, edit spatial and attribute data and present data using maps and charts. We also work with the Rhode Island Geographic Information System (RIGIS) database.

All students receive hands-on software instruction, a copy of ESRI's Introduction to ArcGIS course books with exercises, training data, an Evaluation Software CD, as well as a copy of exercises developed using the RIGIS database. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive an ESRI Certificate of Course Completion. Classes are taught at URI’s Kingston campus.

No prior knowledge of GIS is required, however, participants should be comfortable using a computer and working in a Windows operating system environment.

new elevation data available

The following elevation data are now available:

The data are available under the Planning & Cadastre data download section:
http://www.edc.uri.edu/rigis/data/planningCadastre.aspx

The data are available as a single seamless statewide dataset, and have also been clipped down to the county level for your convenience.

This is a statewide, seamless digital dataset of the land cover/land use for the State of Rhode Island derived using semi-automated methods and based on imagery captured in 2003-2004. The project area encompasses the State of Rhode Island and also extends 1/2 mile into the neighboring states of Connecticut and Massachusetts or to the limits of the source orthophotgraphy. Geographic feature accuracy meets the National Mapping Standards for 1:5000 scale mapping with respect to base level data (roads, hydrography, and orthos). The minimum mapping unit for this dataset is .5 acre. The land use classification scheme used for these data was based on the Anderson Level III modified coding schema used in previous land use datasets in Rhode Island (1988 & 1995) with some modifications for the 2003 classification.

Please note that these data were derived from automated and photointerpreted processes and should be used for preliminary planning purposes only. The wetland areas contained in this data set do not include all wetlands previously identified in other RIGIS land cover/land use data sets or in other separate GIS wetlands data sets and interpretation of wetlands areas should lean toward the side of caution.
Wetlands areas previously classified as forested wetlands are shown as forested areas in this data set. Statistical comparisons with prior RIGIS land cover/land use data should be treated with caution since significant differences in the methodologies used to delineate features were employed.

8 updated and 1 new dataset posted to RIGIS website

The following Facilities & Structures data updated:
